MrMoco Rentals pushed the limits on this project, using setups like one robot holding the end of a tape measure to control its descent into frame, while another robot handled a pencil for a macro wraparound shot tracking the pencil lead marking the table.
Working alongside director Harry Rambaut, MrMoco Rentals took previs from Cinema4D and solved the moves in Simul8, pre-engineering all the technically complex shots ahead of the shoot to ensure every move was achievable and perfectly timed. Using the Simul8-based robot movements in Maya, the set was designed in Vectorworks, carefully planning window angles and lighting to avoid any camera shadows.
We also conducted extensive tests with rigging techniques to hold the tape measure for seamless paint-outs and manually transferred keyframes into the real-world robots so Tomi could maintain full control of the final moves in Flare.
Collaborating with a previs team so skilled in lens fields of view, sensor dimensions, and minimum depth of field was a pleasure. Over a month of idea exchanges and lens swaps ensured every shot worked exactly as intended.
