John Lewis – Tableau
MrMoco Rentals supplied two BOLT X systems on track for Tableau, the John Lewis campaign celebrating 100 years of its ‘Never Knowingly Undersold’ promise. Directed by Kim Gehrig through Somesuch, the film was designed as a single, continuous camera move, capturing a century of British life in one evolving scene.
To execute the concept, two BOLT X systems were mounted on decking and operated in synchronized tandem, delivering a seamless flow across multiple performance zones. The rigs performed a precise takeover at the end of the track, allowing one arm to continue the motion of the other for a continuous run through the full set.
Ahead of the shoot, MrMoco Rentals conducted physical tests and collaborated closely with Selected Works to create a detailed tech-vis. Equipment speeds, camera paths, and transition points between the BOLT X systems were carefully planned to ensure the creative vision could be achieved within the required time. This iterative process of testing, pre-vis, tech-vis, and on-set adjustments was critical to locking in the final design of the move.
During filming, the MrMoco team worked closely with director Kim and DOP Philippe, often making simultaneous live adjustments to both systems to refine camera timing, pacing, and framing. Coordination between the BOLT X systems, operators, and production departments was essential to maintaining the rhythm and continuity of the single-take shot.
The final result is a technically complex yet fluid motion control sequence that connects multiple worlds and eras in-camera, supporting the creative vision of Tableau as a moving piece of art.
